For this bench i used 2x8 and 2x10 construction-grade lumber and a piece of 3/4" mdf for the shelf. the upside to using construction-grade lumber is the price. the southern yellow pine boards for this bench cost right around $100 here in north carolina. unfortunately, the downside to using this type of lumber is the quality.. Materials. standard 2 x 4 framing lumbers will be used to build up the project’s frame. you can use 4 x 8 sheets of plywood sheeting that is 1/2 inch thick for the tabletop as well as the shelves. finally, pegboards sheets are added to this work bench to provide a vertical tool storage surface..
